Before I realized that I would be living a gluten-free life I was addicted to veggie “chicken” wings. With Foodwings right around the corner from where I lived, I had them take out or delivery at least once a week. Then the hives started and I thought that was the end of the love affair. Now, I have been in the May Wah store front on Hester Street any number of times since then. Most of their packages are very clearly labeled and they have a surprising number of meet subs that do not contain gluten. I cannot even stress how rare this is in a regular supermarket or health food store where even the “burger” crumbles are tainted. (Incidentally, I really, really don’t get this. You’d think it would be possible for gluten to be left out for the same reason crumbles are one of Morningstar’s rare vegan items.) But for a long time, the wings weren’t in stock, so I was never able to check. As the years passed, I decided that maybe the wings just weren’t for me.
